Mission Statements plot
The four protagonists of 'Mission Statements' are the four imposing new embassies in the heart of four completely different countries. The controversial buildings in Paramaribo, Maputo (Mozambique), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and Berlin were created by a project of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as calling cards for Dutch architecture and diplomacy. The documentary gives a unique look behind the curtains of the striking buildings and reveals the underestimated cultural aspects of diplomacy and the misunderstandings that come with it. The portrait of the four embassies and their employees, interviews with architects who participated in the projects and conversations with visitors raise questions about the added value of architecture for the diplomacy that the Netherlands stands for.
