Marlene Dumas has definitely made a breakthrough as an artist. Marlene Dumas is fascinated by the representation of human emotions in a figurative style. The work is subdued and humorously shows the cruelty and tragedy of life. Death, man as a monster, problems of good and evil, farewell and homesickness are recurring themes. Like so many artists, she draws on her own life experience to give shape to those emotions. But she manages to transform these autobiographical experiences into universal images in such a way that it not only produces powerful and disturbing work, but that this work at the same time retains an open character. Here Dumas is followed over a period of six months. The first toll of fame is on its way. She literally says, "I don't know, what I want anymore. I don't know when to say yes and when to say no".
