Machteloos plot
Young adults with intellectual disabilities live in the Parkwijk project who experience difficulties in raising their children. Family coaches monitor the residents and make agreements with them about housekeeping, drinking and drug intake and parenting. An often frustrating and emotional process for the care providers, who navigate between gaining the trust of the parents and the well-being of the children. In case of misbehavior by the parents, the coaches are obliged to report to the guardians, which can lead to the placement of the offspring. Van den Berge follows several families and their coaches, who are achieving varying degrees of success. It often turns out to be complicated to enter into a conversation with clients, because it is difficult for them to foresee the consequences of their actions. During crisis meetings, the discussion regularly flares up whether these people should be allowed to have children.
