Les Ensortilèges de James Ensor plot
Documentary by Nora Philippe and Arnaud de Mézamat about James Ensor (1860-1949), who was born 150 years ago. James Ensor was a versatile man and an innovative artist who had a major influence on the development of modern (Belgian) art. Ensor was a cult painter, an iconoclast, a precursor of and example for German Expressionism and Cobra. He started painting when he was thirteen. Initially his work tended towards impressionism, but this was not appreciated by the classical school in his entourage. After that, he radically changed his style and started painting his famous masks and skeletal figures. To evoke Ensor's enchantment, the documentary makes full use of texts by the master himself. The film shows his canvases up close and lets admirer Pierre Alechinsky, among others, speak.
