Karamay plot

In 1997, Karamay's Friendship Hall was the site of a terrible tragedy. Nearly 800 primary and secondary school students and their teachers attended to entertain a delegation of education officials and attended a performance. Suddenly a fire broke out in the hall. The students were instructed to remain seated in their seats so that the supervisors could leave the building first. By the time the fire was brought under control, 323 people were missing, including 288 children between the ages of 6 and 14. All officials survived the disaster. After the tragedy, the story was heavily censored in the Chinese state media. To this day, Karamay's families have not been allowed to publicly mourn for their children.
