Justice for Sale plot
"This legal system has no meaning anymore; I wonder what the future will bring our children." Congolese lawyer Claudine Tsongo reflects on her search for the truth in a rape case where perpetrator Masamba became the victim of unfair justice. Without any hard evidence, he is sentenced to a long prison term and Tsongo suspects bribery. As the main character of this documentary, she guides you through the suspects of this failing justice system. But the documentary makers also allow the viewer to witness the trial of Masamba: an absurd scene that seems more like a ritual act than a substantive discussion about the facts. While Masamba's lawyer walks around animatedly, he complains that this trial "looks like a staged Hollywood story". Perhaps he is right. Meanwhile, the judge nudges his clerk for forgetting to write down the lawyer's words. Justice for Sale takes a serious look at how Congo's current legal system is failing its purpose, partly under pressure from local and international NGOs.
