Hooligan Sparrow plot
Armed with her camera, Nanfu Wang follows a group of activists led by Ye Haiyan as they protest the impunity surrounding a sex scandal. Due to her critical attitude, Ye Haiyan quickly becomes an enemy of the state and the government pulls out all the stops to silence her. She gained fame as an activist by controversially denouncing living conditions in Chinese brothels. She worked voluntarily as a prostitute in a brothel for a while and documented the plight in which the often poor rural women work. It earned her the nickname 'Hooligan Sparrow' and a lot of online attention, as well as aroused the attention of the authorities.
