Hitler's Olympics plot
In 1930, Germany was given the privilege of hosting the 1936 Olympic Games. However, this gesture of bringing Germany back into the world community became problematic when the Nazis took over the country in 1933, both domestically and internationally. However, a reluctant Hitler was persuaded to allow the event to go ahead for his own purposes, even as the international sporting world grappled with the moral choice to participate. What followed from these moral struggles was a tournament originally intended to promote international brotherhood that was twisted into a nationalistic celebration of perceived German Aryan superiority that even the legendary athletic triumphs of African-American Olympic great Jesse Owens could not fully puncture .
