Het Jaar 2602 plot
In early 1942, during World War II, Japan occupied the Dutch East Indies. According to the Japanese era, it is 2602. The Dutch have to swear obedience to the Japanese emperor. Children of yesteryear, then aged between four and eighteen, tell what they experienced in the Japanese Internment Camps. Children's eyes look uninhibited into the camp and soon hunger, death and soldiers in boots are as common as hand claps and hide-and-seek. These are personal testimonies of hardship and trauma, but also of survival, inventiveness and childlike amazement.
