Heartworn Highways plot
"The best music and the best whiskey come from the same part of the country."
Documentary filmmaker James Szalapski explores the contemplative side of Country music. In 1975, James visits a handful of outstanding singers and lyricists. James finds most of these people outside of Nashville. We see the performance of Townes Van Zandt, who shows his farm and, while drinking with his neighbor, discusses the pros and cons of Country music. James visits Gamble Rogers, who brought nightclub style to Country music. Guy Clark plays several songs in his kitchen. David Allan Coe talks about his criminal past during a concert in prison. James also visits the Charlie Daniels Band, which is preparing for a performance in a small town. We also see performances by Rodney Crowell, Steve Young and a young Steve Earle, ten years before he became famous.
