Gatekeepers plot
In 2008, more than 15,275 people applied for political asylum in the Netherlands. Of these, 427 were recognized as refugees. In Gatekeepers it becomes clear how this strict selection is achieved. For a period of time, the filmmaker followed a number of so-called 'hearers' in their work: hearing and then assessing the stories of asylum seekers. Experienced and seemingly unfazed, they listen to accounts of violence, poverty, war and other horrors. They know all the tricks that exist, such as filing away or treating fingertips with depilatory cream to make fingerprints impossible.
