“I shoot to see what the world looks like in photos.” This is how photographer Garry Winogrand (1928-1984) formulated his artistic starting point. What can be seen in the photo was secondary to how it is seen; form always took precedence over substance at Winogrand. New Yorker Winogrand, who initially wanted to be a painter, started taking photographs in the 1950s. Because he worked a lot on the street, he was seen as a street photographer, a label he himself described as 'nonsensical'.
