Fragile Memory plot
In the summer house of Leonid Burlaka, a successful cameraman in the heyday of the Soviet film studios, his grandson Igor Ivanko finds piles of old negatives. The Ukrainian filmmaker has this private collection developed and tries to digitally restore the weathered prints. They show the life history of Burlaka, who shot more than thirty feature films between 1964 and 1999 for the Odessa Film Studio – an important production pillar in the glory years of Soviet cinema. Ivanko questions his retired grandfather at his kitchen table. What was it like to film in those days? What degree of freedom did he experience, both artistically and privately? The answers to these and many other questions often remain unanswered. Burlaka suffers from Alzheimer's and his memory is rapidly deteriorating.
