Fortune Teller plot
This documentary follows Li Baicheng, a traditional Chinese fortune-teller, and his deaf-mute, mentally and physically handicapped wife Kleine Parel for four seasons. In a village not far from Beijing, Li calculates the future for his clientele, who seem to consist mainly of prostitutes. When the police crack down on both the sex industry and the illegal fortune tellers, he is forced to move back to his native village with Little Pearl. The narration is structured in chapters, in a form that references the popular fiction of the Qing dynasty.
