After a fight at school, 17-year-old Daje Shelton ends up in an alternative high school under judicial supervision. She is determined to turn the tide and work for a brighter future in her rough neighborhood of St. Louis. But focusing on the school is hard as she loses several friends to gun violence. She falls in love with and becomes pregnant with a boy, Ahkeem, for the first time.
