Football Beh Sabk-e Irani plot
One hundred thousand football supporters are jumping with unprecedented enthusiasm in a sold out stadium. The blue ones are for Esteghlal, the red ones for Persepolis, according to the voice-over: the two most popular teams in Iran. We see a hundred thousand men: women are not allowed to enter the stadium. Yet Maziar Bahari also shows women in his documentary about Iranian football fans. A girl who nervously visits a public training ground to meet her hero. Bahari films long scenes with long shots, so that we can quietly watch the conversations between fans and between fans and football players. He shows a cross-section of Iranian society and their love for football; from the idolatrous teenage girls via an imam to Iranian immigrants in Germany.
