Fiume o Morte! plot
In 1919, the Paris Peace Conference proposed giving the city of Fiume (present-day Rijeka) to Croatia. The Italian poet, aristocrat and military officer Gabriele D'Annunzio was furious about this and declared the Italian Regency of Carnaro. The subsequent 16-month occupation is considered one of the strangest experiments in governance in history. "Fiume o Morte!" is a mixture of archive footage, documentary intermezzos, interviews with the actors and dramatic reconstructions to paint a picture of the times, and deals with the ultra-nationalist ideas behind D'Annunzio's actions.
