Eldorado plot
When Markus Imhoof was still a boy in Switzerland, his parents took in the young Italian refugee Giovanna. But global politics abruptly ended the friendship between the two children. The director's memories of those events prompted him to tackle Europe's current refugee policy. An Italian naval ship off the coast of Libya takes on 1,800 boat refugees, who have no chance of legally entering Europe. From the ship they are taken to a refugee camp where they spend an average of between eight and fifteen months. For those who choose to leave the camp, often the only option is to work illegally: women are forced into prostitution and men are hired to work on tomato plantations.
