Duutsers plot

How was the Second World War experienced in Rouveen in Overijssel? This Orthodox Christian village near Staphorst was self-sufficient during the war. And therefore largely isolated from the outside world.

Geertjan Lassche [b. 1976] grew up in the Overijssel village of Rouveen, a strictly Reformed village in the proverbial smoke of Staphorst. He speaks with the last eyewitnesses of De Bezet who, in the sometimes difficult to understand (but subtitled) Low Saxon, give a candid and nuanced picture of life with the 'Duutsers'. Communication with surrounding villages, let alone with the big cities, was negligible and that explains why the farming community in Rouveen made the best of it. Relaxed photos of children with German soldiers confirm that The Occupation was not all misery everywhere and/or always. It is good, but also confronting for some, to hear the testimonies of people whose memories have not been clouded by a somewhat one-sided view of events. Interesting in terms of content, but Lassche cannot do much more than film the testimonies of the interviewees in a static manner in their living room or kitchen.
