Doomsday: World War I plot
On June 28, 1914, the Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo. Few then suspected that this incident would trigger a major war. But when the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia four weeks later, it set off a chain reaction that would drag all of Europe and the world into catastrophic conflict. Nevertheless, all warring parties were initially optimistic about the outcome. Also British officer Bernard Montgomery and German soldier Adolf Hitler. They would be home by Christmas. But nothing could prepare them and the other soldiers for the impact of modern military technology: a senseless and brutal slaughter on an industrial scale.
