Die Bauliche Maßnahme plot
Nikolaus Geyrhalter explores the few square kilometers around the Brenner Pass. In 2016, this border between Austria and Italy suddenly became the scene of the changing EU policy on the refugee crisis. After the Balkan route was closed, Austria feared that the refugees would cross the Brenner Pass en masse. In the spring of 2016, Austria took 'construction measures', a euphemism for installing fences. Geyrhalter conducted conversations with local police officers, hikers, farmers, toll collectors and cafe owners, captured in extremely precise shots. Here in this small border region, voices of all kinds, often strikingly nuanced, are heard, from hidden xenophobia to criticism of the populist government.
