Desert One plot

"The most difficult and audacious rescue mission ever"

In 1979, shortly after Ayatollah Khomeini took power in Iran and the ousted Shah was taken in by the United States, much to the fury of the new leaders, the American embassy in Tehran was attacked by Iranian revolutionaries and 52 Americans were taken hostages there during Held for 444 days. President Jimmy Carter announced that he wanted to end the hostage situation through diplomatic channels, but later plotted a secret military rescue.
