De Burgerwacht plot
The emergence of vigilantes is a clear trend in the Netherlands. Hardly any village or neighborhood is exempt from the 'WhatsApp Neighborhood Prevention' sign. The centralization of government in recent decades has led to a subtle but visible degradation of the living environment, especially in smaller municipalities. The space created by the increasingly distant local government is filled by residents. They organize themselves on social media and do, for example, patrols through the neighbourhood. But to what extent is such a vigilante desirable? How does the local government deal with this? And where is the line between civic duty and meddling?
