Arthur Ashe was a pioneering tennis player on and off the court. Ashe won at Wimbledon in 1975. In 1988, Ashe was diagnosed with HIV as a result of blood transfusions during surgery, and he died in 1993 from complications resulting from AIDS. Several confidants, including Ashe's widow, brother, and childhood friends, describe his personal journey from sporting legend to grand slam player to global activist.
