Deng Xiaoping has gone down in history as the man who gave the order to open fire on protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989. With this film, Rob Coldstream shows that Deng Xiaoping's capitalist revolution also laid the foundations for the flourishing economy of contemporary China. Deng Xiaoping enabled the transformation of China into an economic superpower while preserving the communist political system. With archive footage and testimonies from party bosses, from domestic and foreign entrepreneurs and observers and from ordinary Chinese workers, the documentary reconstructs the political history of China since the 1970s on the basis of the life story of Deng Xiaoping.
