Chaplin in Bali plot

In 1932, Charlie Chaplin went through a midlife crisis, partly caused by the rise of the sound film. After a European promotional tour for 'City Lights' he did not return to Hollywood, but fled to Bali with his brother Sydney. Because no one knew him there, the island was an oasis of calm for Chaplin. He became fascinated by the serene lifestyle of the inhabitants and found inspiration in their dance rituals, which he decided to film with his brother. Bali freed him from his fear of sound, which started a new phase in his film career that would lead to 'Modern Times', in which he not only spoke, but even sang.
