Bobbejaan plot

A Flemish cowboy in his villa in the Kempen. Outside, people are screaming on a roller coaster. This is Bobbejaan's little world. He is ill. What does it do to a person when you have "much past but little future"? Bobbejaan composed, sang, whistled, yodelled and acted a great career together. He sold millions of records and toured the world. Tired of traveling, he built a concert hall that grew into a successful amusement park. Life rumbled by. So close to death, he wonders if he always made the right choices. It fades out slowly and dignified. But then he shines again.

This documentary was rebroadcast on Canvas on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Bobbejaan Schoepen (°1925) who died in 2010. Bobbejaan Schoepen is a legendary figure in show business, circus world, music world, entertainment sector that spanned several generations in the second half of the 20th century. With his musical career he had success in the 1950s as a yodeling whistler all over the world, even in the Grand Ole Opry - the mecca of country music - in Nashville. Afterwards he became a household name with his wildly popular amusement park Bobbejaanland that still exists under that name.

The documentary zooms in on the last moments of Bobbejaan Schoepen. We see him lying on his bed, more or less his deathbed. We see him perform with his last effort from a wheelchair with Lichtjes van de Schelde. It reminded me of the last performance of Johnny Cash in 2007 who also did it - in disrepair - from a wheelchair. Those poignant moments in which Bobbejaan also ruminates about his past and what could have been different - his musical career that he put on hold to build his amusement park - with the successes he has known. His amusement park that also squeezed him like a lemon with up to six performances a day for an enthusiastic audience.

From the archive footage he emerges as an eccentric - dressed in clothes by the legendary Nudie Cohn - energetic and always friendly entertainer. A man of a thousand talents who had to choose which talent he wanted to play out the most.

It is a very moving and confronting documentary because it also confronts us with our own finitude. Furthermore, it only sheds light on the richly filled life of Bobbejaan Schoepen. The life of this man has been so interesting that a biopic would be more than appropriate.
