Blatnoi Mir plot
Three detainees are serving life in a Russian prison. The shots of the panoramic view outside the remote building emphasize the hopelessness of their existence. In the first half hour, the three can only be heard on the voice-over. We see their faces, with staring eyes. From afar there are hollow prison sounds: the footsteps of a guard, the sound of a closing door. The camera slides through empty corridors; a gray haze hangs over everything. Director Jouni Hiltunen captures the extreme monotony and inhumanity of prison life. The three portrayed have resigned themselves to their fate. Hiltunen films them with their small daily activities.
