Bij Ons in Scharloo plot

"Bij Ons in Scharloo" is a documentary about the deprived neighborhood of Scharloo (in Willemstad), the work that Stichting Monumentenzorg Curaçao wants to perform here and the tensions that the future changes evoke among the residents. Fashion designer Junius Isenia proudly shows his neighborhood: "You can't get better on the island!". He knows that something needs to improve, but is afraid that the current residents will be chased away. For him, even the dowdy junkie is a fashion model in the shabby, corrugated-iron roof-strewn neighborhood. The Curaçao Monument Care Foundation has recently established its office in Scharloo and managing director George Schmit looks at the same neighborhood from a completely different perspective. He sees a poor, neglected neighborhood where many junkies and illegal immigrants live, but where there are also many small and large monuments. That is the reason for wanting to develop the neighbourhood. For example, Monumentenzorg wants to turn the brothel on the corner into a coin museum and the slum housing into a tourist attraction.
