Bellavista plot
In Bellavista, Peter Schreiner goes to the Italian Alpine village of Sappada, in the province of Belluno. Another endangered East Tyrolean dialect is spoken here. When Schreiner, who draws for camera and sound himself, has chopped enough wood, the community has opened up to him. What follows is a thoughtful, serene and sensitive encounter with three women from Sappada, each with a tragic and resilient story to tell. There are two elderly women, Bernardina and Erminia, who had to do heavy manual labour. And there's the much younger Giuliana, who rebelled by going abroad to study linguistics, yet had to return to enlist at the local hotel. She has resigned herself to her fate; two of her brothers committed suicide.
