Barzakh plot

What is it like to live in a city torn by war, where large mosques are flanked by torture chambers? Where the visions of fortune tellers are more supportive than official statements from the government? From 2007 to 2009, filmmaker Mantas Kvedaravicius followed families of missing Chechens for his directorial debut. They do not know where their loved ones are, nor whether they are alive or not. Slowly, the line between fact and fiction begins to blur for them. The difference between the information from the authorities and the insights obtained from clairvoyants is also becoming smaller. Those left behind find support from neighbours, other relatives and people who were once arrested and returned from the ominous place of no return. Whoever is in 'Barzakh' is neither in the land of the living nor in the realm of the dead. It is an intermediate place, where communication is only possible through dreams.
