Awake before Your Gaze plot

In the ruins of a former military dormitory, a globe is being meticulously polished, while small Taiwanese and American flags are neatly placed. Here we meet Michael and Jim, two men with Taiwanese and African-American military backgrounds. Speaking in the Chinese dialects Hakka and Taiwanese Hokkien, they speak openly and vulnerably about the puzzle of cultural background, identity, connection, and language—and the impossibility of being confined to a single category.
