American Arab plot
"A Coming of Arab story."
Born in Iraq and raised in the United States, Usama Alshaibi is an American Arab. But what does that mean? The film begins at the grave of Usama's brother Samer. Photos and film fragments illustrate his life: born in the US, talented and promising, until his addiction to coke and heroin proved fatal. Or, in his mother's words, until he became a martyr to "the American poison". In this way, "American Arab" touches directly on the issue it wants to address: life between two cultures and the expectations, prejudices, suspicions and stereotypes that an American with an Arab appearance and name encounters. But is your identity determined by the country where you were born?
