A Massacre Foretold plot
Director Nick Higgins was studying in Mexico when a bloody massacre took place on December 22, 1997 in the small town of Acteal in southern Mexico. Forty-five native Mexicans were gathered for prayer in the village church when they were murdered by unknown paramilitaries. The villagers were members of a pacifist movement Las Abejas - the bees - and they supported the revolutionary Zapatistas, but disapproved of the latter's violent methods. Higgins was one of the few Western observers allowed to visit the murder site. The event was quickly covered up. Seeing for himself the devastating effect of these brutal murders on the local population, Higgins set out to investigate the story of this murderous act. A few years later he wrote a study about the murders: The Chiapas Rebellion, but he also decided to make the story into a film. The documentary consists of conversations with the survivors, the villagers and the experts, who comment on the political situation in Mexico that led to the massacre.
