Brasilia, an architectural failure or the glory of modernism? Oscar Niemeyer, Lucio Costa and Joaquim Cardozo designed 'the city for the future' in 1956. Their utopia resulted in an unlivable artificial world. 'A Machine to Live In' examines the history of this radical modernism and contrasts it with the texts of the Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector and the architecture of LL Zamenhof, the father of Esperanto. Their fantasies reflect Brasilia during the space age, where the hunger for the future conflicts with the mystical past.
