The Strange Affair plot

"His name is P.C. Strange... Her name is Frederika... All of tonight's secrets will be used against them tomorrow!"

Detective Pierce is informed that a large quantity of drugs will be delivered to Quince, the head of a family of criminals in London. But the bandits are warned by the corrupt Inspector Evans and so they are not caught. Pierce knows Evans is behind that failure and is determined to catch Quince himself. Agent Pete Strange is seduced by the very young "Fred" March, but is oblivious to the girl's ties to the underworld. He is beaten up by Quince's men, but cannot identify anyone because they are masked. Pierce and Strange then decide to work together.

London in the sixties. A young policeman (Michael York) falls victim to an older colleague with a hidden agenda. He is forced into committing criminal acts by a number of compromising photos of his time with a minor girl who seduced him (Susan George). There you have a somewhat more manageable summary than the rather muddled list in the synopsis above.

I might as well be honest, I am a fan of Susan George. That is also the reason I wanted to see this film, because, well, we’ve seen that gangster-police stuff before. George is, of course, best known for her role in 'Straw Dogs' with Dustin Hoffman as her co-star. In the sixties and seventies, she was known as a 'sexpot', insofar as anyone still knows what that word means. But by current standards, it all remained very decent, even in this film; not a bare breast is to be seen. But Susan George had, besides graceful curves, that typical 'Englishness' that you recognized immediately. You can't take your eyes off her.

And then there is the young Michael York, in whom you can already see a great actor hidden. He broke through with his role in 'Cabaret' (1972) opposite Liza Minelli. In short, there is still quite a lot to enjoy in this film. It is just a pity that it has a somewhat unsatisfying ending.
