The Cop plot

Pete Smith is a lift operator in a harbor. He feels lonely in his cabin and his only visitor is a police officer on patrol, Sergeant Coughlin. One evening, after hearing gunshots, he offers a wounded man shelter. He hides it from Coughlin. Before he leaves, the man, Marcas, promises to return to return the borrowed coat. When Smith later joins the police force, his boss Mather suspects that he is protecting Marcas, who is actually a mobster.
