Deputy District Attorney Douglas Goodwin uses circumstantial evidence to win his lawsuits. He has a 100% success rate with convictions with 90% ending in execution. After Douglas argues with his estranged wife Muriel, who refuses to divorce him to prevent him from marrying his secretary Claire Patterson, Muriel is shot and killed by a jewel thief as she tries to fend him off. Douglas, still in the house, finds the gun and shoots the thief, who manages to escape. But now Douglas is convicted of murdering his wife on circumstantial evidence…
