A film that receives rave reviews and critical acclaim everywhere, but has clearly been forgotten. It was once a Cannes film out of competition. When you make a film about South Africa, you usually end up with anti-apartheid themes, and that's certainly the case here. A thief, Panic, despite his apolitical life, becomes involved in the "system." The film is told between the present day, where Panic is in prison, and the events leading up to his arrest. The latter is also the most interesting narrative within the film, showing the growing protests against apartheid policies. Because major social changes are realistically told from the perspective of ordinary people, the viewer empathizes with the lifelike (but otherwise anonymous) characters and their harsh daily lives in a society in which they are trapped. The film is surprisingly accessible to a wide audience.
