Die Fastnachtsbeichte plot
1913, Saturday before Carnival. A young man enters Mainz Cathedral to confess. But before he can even begin, he sinks into the confessional with a knife in his back. At the same time, Adelbert Panezza enthusiastically prepares the 'fool's time'. Panezza is already in his fifties, but his position as Prince Carnival and the young and beautiful princess at his side makes him feel like a young man again. His children, Jeanmarie and Bettine, view his doings with benevolence, but mockingly. In this bustle, Viola Toralto unexpectedly appears, a beautiful girl from the Italian branch of the family.
