On the day of the funeral of her husband Jack, to whom she has been married for 23 years, Jewish Pearl meets the flamboyant Italian Joe Meledandri, an old friend of her late husband. Years ago, Joe gave Jack relationship advice, which ultimately saved his marriage, and Joe has been secretly in love with Pearl ever since. Now that Jack is dead, he wants to court her. Initially, the embittered Pearl refuses to accept his advances, but Joe doesn't give up. Gradually he brings joy into her life again with his enthusiasm and gradually the rest of Pearl's dysfunctional family is also impressed by the Italian.
