Writer Malcolm 'Mal' Niles' seduction plans are shattered when actress Vivian Herford takes her mother to an intimate dinner at his New York apartment. When they discuss the marriage, Malcolm decides to go on a promotional trip for his new book. In a small town in the south, he meets Nancy Briggs at a book signing at the local bookstore. Nancy was supposed to get married that night, but her fiancé, who works in New York, isn't coming back for the wedding. Her family gives her money to travel to New York to find him. At the same time, Malcolm receives a telegram from his publisher and friend Robert "Bob" Hanson, asking him to come home because Vivian has left New York. However, on the train to New York, Malcolm and Nancy meet again...
