The Trouble with Dick plot

Dick Kendred is a frustrated science fiction writer. He has offered his most recent book to several publishers to no avail. Publisher Jack Carter took it too seriously and told him there were too few scantily clad women in it. Dick is disappointed by this and seeks comfort from his girlfriend Diane. But he doesn't get much support from her because she is too focused on her own work. Hoping to write something better, Dick decides to rent a room where he can be alone and work in silence.
