Maggie King (Carole Lombard) meets Private Skid Johnson (Fred MacMurray) in Panama. He is on his last day in the army and agrees to celebrate this festive occasion with Maggie. The two become involved in an incident that causes Maggie to miss her return boat to America, after which Maggie is forced to move in with Skid and his friend Harry (Charles Butterworth). Maggie soon falls in love with Skid, who lands a job as a trumpeter at a local nightclub. He becomes a resounding success as a musician, but when his fame and money go to his head, his relationship with Maggie is strained.
