Sonntagsfahrer plot
Six Leipzig residents plan to leave the German Democratic Republic for West Berlin together on August 12, 1961. Mr. Spiessack, an interior designer, leads the group after receiving information from a former lieutenant in the German Wehrmacht that war is clearly approaching. Before he leaves his apartment with his wife Friedchen, they turn it upside down and leave a message on the wall: “We will be back.” They write a letter to the Socialist Unity Party of Germany. The doctor, Dr. Denker, whose wife is on a Mediterranean cruise at the same time, is not sure that the timing is right.
