Bluford H. Smythe, who has made it big in the big city, returns to his small hometown of Glenwood after a twenty-year absence. He is accompanied by his personal secretary, Ambrose Ames. Despite it being purely a holiday to get some rest and relaxation, the leading citizens of the city welcome him back with some official meetings. Mayor Jonas Tompkins, who has never liked Bluford, holds no grudge against him and also welcomes him with open arms. Although Bluford had no intention of making the news public, the townspeople learn that he has indeed returned to conduct business. He wants to develop a summer resort in Glenwood that will rival the best resorts in the world.
