Bořivoj Kohout does everything he can to keep his wife and children under his thumb. Becvár, daughter Zdeka's suitor, plans to break Bořivoj's tyranny to increase his chances of marrying Zdeňka. Meanwhile, Jaroslav, Bořivoj's brother, wants to reestablish contact between the brothers and travels to his brother. Bořivoj himself, as president of the animal protection association, is busy putting an end to a lion tamer show. He rages so much that he is hospitalized. Becvár and Jaroslav decide to help Bořivoj get out of the hospital, but there has to be something in return.
