Due to a shortage of personnel due to the Second World War, the hitherto passive Jean Howard becomes a sales representative at the 'Howard Oil Supply Company', her father's oil drilling equipment company. Jean has only just mastered her job when she is stranded at the army base 'Camp Clay' due to acts of war. There is really no place for a woman on this army base, unless she is the wife of a soldier. Therefore, Lieutenant Don Mallory is quickly asked to pass for Jean's husband. Things get complicated for both when Captain Jack Ross, Don's senior officer, thinks he and Jean are indeed married and Don's mother unexpectedly visits the army base.
