Night Work plot
"Here they are again!"
Sweet-natured Homer C. Fitch begins his first day as the manager of an upscale apartment complex. That evening, Homer shares his troubles with his wife Sybil, daughter Patricia, adopted son Joe and the orphan Butch Smiley, whom he plans to adopt. They also discuss Butch's future, even though Smokestack Smiley, Butch's old-fashioned laborer and grandfather, has not yet responded to Homer's letter about his adoption. Later in the evening, Butch is brought home by the police officer Flannigan, because he ran away from him. Butch admits he struggles with his homework and didn't want to bring shame to the family with his poor school performance.
