Micawber plot

Wilkins Micawber takes in the orphaned Alice after promising the girl's mother on her deathbed that she would take care of her. Micawber always pretends to be a wealthy gentleman, but in reality he doesn't have a cent. A creditor puts Micawber in need of money and he rents out a room to the playwright Babbitt.
